Success Stories at Grand Teton Races

Labor Day weekend at Grand Targhee was celebrated with perfect running temperatures, great trail conditions, and wonderful people. Racers, volunteers, pacers, crews, family, and friends all came together for an incredibly successful 2010 Grand Teton Races.

tammy-50-2010The 100 mile race started at 6 am Saturday morning, September 4. The 50 mile racers were not far behind, with a 7 am start. The top runners in both races set a quick pace and led the fields all the way to the finish line. Veteran 100 miler, Andy Jones Wilkins, dueled with Duncan Callahan for the duration, finishing with the win and the course record (he beat the course record by 45 mintes!). Local Kerri Wheeler completed her first 100 miler for the women’s win in just over 24 hours. John Pena took the 50 mile title in a time of 9:16:21. The female 50 mile win went to Becky Kirschenmann. For those who were not looking for the long haul, the 10K trail run took off at 8:45 that Saturday morning. A quick morning loop around Rick’s Basin satiated these trail runners, with winning times for the men under 45 minutes and the women just under 50 minutes.

Sunday’s weather broke into cloudy skies and an occasional drizzle but it did not break any of the trail marathon patricia-marathon-finsih-2010runners. Identical to the first 20 miles of the previous day’s races, the 26.2 begins with the 2,000 foot ascent up Fred’s Mountain followed by a 4,000 foot descent to Teton Canyon. Familairity with this tough course were advantages for the locals who took the titles. Trevor Garner sped through the course for the men’s win in 3:55:10. Patricia  Moeller finished first for the women’s win in 4:36:54. All the marathon results are posted at www.dreamchaserevents.com/gtr

The weekend’s success can also be attributed to the great sponsors:

Vasque Project, who matches race donations to local non-profits, Smartwool, Hammer Nutrition, Grand Targhee Resort, Nathan, Damascus Bakeries, Tam Bar, Yak-trax, Grangers, Pro-Tec, Snake River Brewing, Black Diamond and Patagonia.

Congratulations to all the racers! We look forward to the 2011 Grand Teton Races. With the retirement of the 100 mile race, we are excited about new distances to offer, including a 50K. Mark your calendars for Labor Day Weekend 2011 at Grand Targhee Resort in Alta, WY.
